Depression is a term used to describe a chronic state of lowering of mood. It is twice as common in women as in men. It is different from normal sadness and grief by the severity and duration of mood disturbance. The true figure of how many people are affected will never be known, only estimates are used as those affected usually suffer in silence, in shame and far from healthcare facilities and support.
