Expecting a baby is a fulfilling moment in life, the expecting mother keeps counting down days envisioning herself with the baby in her arms. The pregnancy journey turns into misery if anything disrupts it like a miscarriage. It opens an unhealing wound when this journey comes to an end before the anticipated time lapses.
In an exclusive interview with Pharmacist Miriro Shavi, she explains and provides essential points on what miscarriage is. She describes miscarriage as the natural death of an embryo or fetus in the womb before it is old enough to live on its own outside the mother. The medical word for miscarriage means spontaneous abortion which is refers as an unplanned situation.
Shavi further elucidates that in most cases miscarriage happens within the first trimester (first 12 weeks) of pregnancy, these are the weeks where a woman is at the highest risk to have it. However, once a pregnancy reaches 6 weeks the risk possibility drops and from 13 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, the risk of miscarriage drops further, “Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that miscarriage risk doesn’t change much after this, as a complication can arise at any point in pregnancy,’’ she said.
