Melanin is a natural skin pigment that gives a skin colour. A larger amount of melanin makes a skin to be very dark. Although a dark skin is associated with not being clean, it is also said to be ugly and unacceptable in some societies; people have a misunderstanding of a dark skin. Dark skin is the result of deep melanin or large amount of melanin in the skin.

One of the women who is proud of her dark skin is Rethabile Molise Rantsie from Mafeteng. A 23-year-old student believes that a dark skin is a blessing because it protects the skin from damage caused by sun’s UV rays by absorbing and dissipating the light energy.

“Being dark-skinned is a blessing to me. It is a colour that represents being an African. I love being dark and I wish I was darker than this,” flexed Rethabile.

There are many things that justify the phrase which says, ‘Black is beautiful’. Zozibini Tunzi is a dark-skinned model from South Africa, she was crowned Miss Universe 2019. Melanin makes a very beautiful skin. Dark-skinned people rarely get skin cancer because their skin cells are protected by melanin. When the sun hits the skin, the melanin pops up and builds a pigment that protects the skin.
